Front Wheel Drive |
Rear Wheel Drive |
These are probably three questions that immediately enter your mind when the transmission in your vehicle begins to malfunction, and quite frankly they are all legitimate concerns. The unfortunate reality of the matter is they are all probably premature questions. Unless you have a glaring hole in the side of your automatic transmission case, or part of your 4-wheel drive transmission is laying on your garage floor, it is almost impossible to determine whether you need a new transmission, or need your transmission rebuilt, without a thorough examination of the vehicle including all electrical circuits, as well as a computer diagnostic scan.
With the advent of automotive electronic circuits, sensors, solenoids and computer modules supporting your automatic transmission, the modern vehicle has become extremely sophisticated. It is impossible to give you an honest and fair price for your new trans or trans rebuild without a complete diagnosis in the transmission repair shop.

The root cause of transmission failures requires expertise and up to date scanners and software to accurately diagnose and repair these late model vehicles. A computer scan will help the technician discover any electrical problems in the vehicle that may be causing the transmission to malfunction.

How would you feel if you took your car or truck down the street to the nationwide franchise transmission and automotive repair shop and told them you need a new transmission only to later find out you had an electrical short between the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) and the solenoid pack? You didn't need a new transmission, but you found out only after a new transmission was installed.
So, when your transmission begins to act differently don't ask "How much does it cost for a new transmission" but rather, "How much does it cost to check out my transmission to find out what it REALLY needs?"
(A used trans is a working transmission taken from a used car and placed in your car. A rebuilt trans is a transmission that has been repaired by a licensed and certified transmission repair shop. There are various levels of rebuilt transmissions, from a simple transmission part replacement to a complete overhaul. A remanufactured trans is a used (working or not) transmission that has been comprehensively overhauled in a factory, usually to original equipment manufacturer (OEM) specifications.)
